A Brief History of USF

The University of South Florida, established in 1956 and located in Tampa, is a high-impact global research university dedicated to student success. The USF System includes three separately accredited institutions: USF, USF St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee. Serving more than 50,000 students, the USF System has an annual budget of $1.8 billion and an annual economic impact of $4.4 billion. USF ranks in the top 25 nationally for research expenditures among public universities, according to the National Science Foundation. In 2018, the Florida Board of Governors designated USF as a Preeminent State Research University, placing USF in the most elite category among the state's 12 public universities. USF is a member of the American Athletic Conference.

Among the many impressive programs at USF, one of the most dynamic is the Taneja College of Pharmacy (COP). Since opening its doors to the first class of students in 2011, COP has made tremendous strides that have placed it at the vanguard of pharmacy education. Its innovative curriculum, research endeavors, and commitment to educating and empowering pharmacy practitioners ensure that its graduates are well-equipped to thrive in the challenging and ever-evolving healthcare field.

One example of how USF Taneja College of Pharmacy prepares its students for the future is the Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology (MSPN) program.

Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology

Of all the amazing advances that science has brought the world in recent years, perhaps none is more exciting or promising than nanotechnology. The only program of its kind in Florida, USF MSPN is a unique interdisciplinary program that synergizes the natural sciences, engineering, and pharmacy in the development of nanopharmaceuticals. The program is designed to help students develop the skills and knowledge that they will need to be able to understand and work with nanoscale technologies and nanomaterials in their application to diagnosis, drug delivery, treatment monitoring, tissue regeneration, and personalized medicine, to name but a few.

Within MSPN, students can choose from one of three academic tracks:

  • General (core requirements/capstone course)
  • Entrepreneurship (core requirements/internship/capstone course)
  • Research (core requirements/thesis)

The General Track is designed to provide a strong foundation in pharmaceutical sciences and nanotechnology for students who ultimately aspire to enter a professional program. In addition to core courses in nanomedicine and nanopharmacy, this track offers classes in a diverse array of subjects including biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, and anatomy.

The Entrepreneurship Track is geared toward students whose goal is to work at a pharmaceutical company. Beyond the core curriculum, this track provides the invaluable opportunity for internships at leading companies in order to gain essential hands-on experience with equipment, terminology, and resources.

The Research Track is focused on preparing students for the pursuit of advanced degrees and/or to pursue professional careers in academia. Working closely with faculty mentors, students in this track will undertake hands-on research in the laboratory setting.

MSPN also offers two concentrations:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Drug Discovery, Development, Delivery & Manufacturing (D4M)

Biomedical Engineering is intended for students who plan to enter a professional program, work in academia or pursue a career in the industry. Through courses such as biomedical engineering, biostatistics, and basic science anatomy and physiology, the concentration allows students to develop a nuanced understanding of the nanosciences and nanotechnology from an engineering perspective.

D4M is tailored to meet the needs of students who wish to enter academia, the drug development industry or research, or to pursue advanced degrees. Courses offered include nanotechnology and risk management; drug discovery and frontier; and principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In addition, D4M offers students the opportunity to engage in hands-on, original research under the guidance of dedicated faculty mentors.

A Fast, Flexible, and Affordable Education

No matter which track or concentration that MSPN students choose, they will have a wealth of advantages that other programs cannot match. With a total of 32 credit hours, a flexible curriculum, and both Fall & Spring entry terms, MSPN degrees can be earned in as little as one academic year. To make things even more convenient, the program can be completed face-to-face, entirely online or a combination of both.

While maximizing flexibility for its students, USF also strives to minimize costs. Currently, tuition and fees for full-time in-state students are approximately $20,000 per year and $38,000 for out-of-state students. Each MSPN student has access to the services provided by the USF Health Office of Financial Aid, which works in conjunction with University Scholarship and Financial Aid Services to help students in need find assistance packages that are suitable to their individual situations.

The Future of Healthcare is at USF

USF Taneja College of Pharmacy's stated mission to revolutionize health in two key ways:

  • Innovation of patient-centered healthcare through education, research, and service
  • Empowerment of students, professionals, and patients as catalysts for change at all levels of health

Without question, the College's MSPN program embodies these admirable objectives by embracing innovation and empowerment. Graduates will be poised to develop and implement remarkable new treatments that will remarkably advance the field of healthcare in the coming years.
