The University of Southern Maine -- Maine's Metropolitan University

The University of Southern Maine (USM) is a multi-campus public university located in Central and Southern Maine, which includes the largest urban areas in Maine. At Maine's Metropolitan University, through undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, USM prepares students to play vital roles in the diverse economic, civic, social, and cultural fabric of Maine and beyond. Each of USM's three, environmentally friendly campuses in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston is unique, yet all share the extensive resources of the university. The University of Southern Maine offers a robust selection of on-campus and online courses and graduate degree programs in STEM disciplines, business, social work, education, creative writing, music, health and public policy fields.

The faculty members at the University of Southern Maine often put theory into practice by becoming involved in community issues. Their area expertise, commitment to excellence, and innovation often provides a strong foundation to community members looking to solve complex issues, regionally, nationally, and even globally. USM students bring curiosity, a strong work ethic, intelligence, and a desire to succeed. This close-knit collaboration of talent has created and supported an in-depth network of alumni and public and private community partners across Maine.

A USM education strengthens the ties between theory and practice through research, internship, and practicum experiences. University of Southern Maine graduate students have access to a wide range of opportunities with state and local government, triple-A sports teams, leading teaching hospitals, non-profit organizations, and a variety of music and performing arts venues -- opportunities not readily available in larger or more populous states.

Learning. Engaging. Giving Back.

USM's vast network of alumni, private and public community partners, expert faculty members, and broad program offerings provides valuable and deep connections throughout the state of Maine. Serving as a center for discovery, scholarship, and creativity, the University of Southern Maine embraces academic freedom for students, faculty members, and staff members; advocates diversity; and supports sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and community involvement. USM is a major educational engine in the overall growth and development of the Central and Southern Maine regions. In 2012-13, more than 5,000 graduate and undergraduate students contributed services through internships and service learning opportunities, representing a value to Maine communities of more than $6.2 million. This exemplifies one of many ways in which USM fulfills its mission of learning, engaging, and giving back to the communities it serves.

USM offers a range of master's and doctoral degree programs. Students may choose from a variety of formats that meet their needs, including full-time, part-time, day, evening, online, or on campus. Online graduate degree programs are developed and taught by the same expert faculty members who teach on campus.

The USM School of Business is internationally accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), an achievement earned by fewer than 5% of business schools worldwide.

USM is nationally known for its Stonecoast MFA Program in Creative Writing, a graduate program that enrolls approximately 100 students in four major genres: creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and popular fiction. It has been rated in the top 10 schools for creative writing by "Poets and Writers Magazine" several years running.
