Mr. & Mrs. Lutkenhouse founded the Hawai'i Tropical Botanical Garden as a nature preserve and sanctuary, a living seed bank, and a study center for trees and plants of the tropical world. They created the Dan & Pauline Lutkenhouse & Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden Scholarship and Educational Fund to benefit the youth in the community in which they live. The Hawai'i Community Foundation will give preference for recipients who were awarded in the immediate prior year if such recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirements and is in good academic standing. The donor requires the applicants to be a resident of the Hilo Coast and the Hamakua Coast, north of the Wailuku River. Applicants must also be taking college courses in agriculture, science, medicine, nursing, other skilled lab, X-ray or trade schools requiring special education and training.
