The Judith L. Pipher Memorial Scholarship Award recognizes the late Judy Pipher for her contributions to infrared astronomy, her mentoring the next generation of scientists and engineers, and her many contributions to USRA as a member of the Board of Trustees, the representative for University of Rochester, and the Chair of the USRA SOFIA Science Council. Applicants must be undergraduate students attending a four-year accredited college or university that offers courses leading to a degree in science or engineering. They must be within two years of earning a B.S. or a B.A. in a field of science and engineering, including life science and science education by the time the award is received. Consideration will be given to students who are yet to be recognized for their accomplishments and potential. All applicants must submit a description of particular examples of extra-curricular activities that demonstrate leadership or having a broader impact. These may include K-12 activities, community outreach, mentoring, a space science or engineering club/organization, advancing opportunities in STEM, or other ways of giving back to the community. Applicants are also required to submit two letters of recommendation from at least one from a professor, mentor, or school official at the college level. It is recommended that the letter writers be personally familiar with the applicant's accomplishments, performance, skills, character, and/or experience. It is also recommended, where possible, that at least one letter be from a research/project advisor at postdoc level or higher. Applicants must be US citizens or lawful Permanent Residents. Non-U.S. students attending USRA Member Universities located outside the United States are also eligible to apply. Applicants must be citizens of the country in which the university is based. In addition, all application materials must be in English, and eligibility with regard to academic grades and number of years to undergraduate degree must be equivalent to that for U.S. applicants.
