Kazuma and Ichiko Hisanaga Scholarship Fund

Description

The Kazuma and Ichiko Hisanaga Scholarship Fund was established by Kazuma and Ichiko Hisanaga who both served most of their lives as educators in the Hilo community. Mr. Hisanaga was a well-known coach, athletic director, and football, baseball and basketball star for Hilo High School. Their strong belief in the value of sports participation, leadership, and education is reflected in the type of student this scholarship will support. The donor requires the applicants to be an athlete that participated in a varsity sport while in high school, with preference given to students participating in more than one varsity sport. They must attend an accredited, four year, not-for-profit institution within the continental U.S. that is a NAIA, Division II, or Division III school. The donor also requires applicants to have leadership experience and qualities as demonstrated by serving as the captain of a varsity sports team, a student government leader, or an officer of an extracurricular program. They must have also participated in community service. One letter of recommendation is required from either the Athletic Director of the student's high school or the student's high school or post-secondary counselor. This letter of recommendation should address the student's varsity sports participation and school/media athletic awards, and leadership roles and qualities, including leadership roles in varsity sports, student government, and extracurricular clubs, etc., and school achievements as recognized by the school and media, moral character, and community service. Preference, in order of priority, will be given to (1) graduates from Hilo High School. (2) If there are no eligible applicants from Hilo High School, current year graduating seniors will be considered from other Hawaii Island high schools in the following order of preference: Waiakea High School, St. Joseph High School, and other Hawai'i Island high schools. (3) Students attending a Division II, Division III, or NAIA school on the mainland. Please visit the scholarship's website or contact the Hawai'i Community Foundation for more information.
