Malyon-Smith Scholarship Research Award

Description

The Malyon-Smith Scholarship Research Award is named for two founding past-presidents of the division, the late Alan Malyon and the late Adrienne Smith. It is a fund that annually is awarded to selected graduate students in psychology to advance research on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). The award represents one of the division's major efforts to mentor and support science in LGBT psychology by encouraging the work of young researchers. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a department of psychology at the graduate level. Applications from students in allied disciplines, such as social work and sociology, cannot be considered at this time. A complete application consists of electronic versions of the following materials: completed cover sheet; copy of the applicant's curriculum vitae; copy of the project description; and one letter from the applicant's faculty supervisor addressing the quality, importance, and feasibility of the project, qualifications of the applicant, applicant's preparation to do SOGD research and how the applicant will be mentored in SOGD research. The letter should also state that the applicant's faculty supervisor has reviewed and supports the application and believes that the applicant has the skills and resources to carry it out. The project description should include: the background and rationale for the project, including a succinct summary of past empirical findings that informed the proposed study; a clear statement of the research questions or hypotheses; the methodology, including description of and rationale for the participants, measures, procedures, and data analysis as well as a discussion of any ethical considerations; anticipated or achieved findings; potential implications of findings for the field; timeline listing when each phase of the study would likely be completed (if it has not yet been completed); statement supporting the feasibility of the project; description of mentoring the student will receive for conducting SOGD research; and a description of the applicant's interest and experience in and commitment to SOGD research. The applicant may also want to discuss how their social locations affect the proposed research. Please visit the scholarship's website for more information.
