The NPA Foundation High School Journalism Scholarship will be awarded to current high school students of Nebraska high schools enrolled or planning to enroll in post-secondary educational programs at a college and university with an interest in community-based journalism or ag communications. The scholarships will be given to students with a specific interest in news, editorial, sports, photography, circulation, production/design or marketing/advertising careers at a weekly, semi-weekly, or daily newspaper. The educational institution involved must offer a curriculum which provides the necessary education so a student graduating from the program is qualified for at least an entry level position in community-based journalism or ag communications. Selection of the recipients will be based on scholastic ability, essay question response, and student's involvement in their local community newspaper, or student newspaper. A statement from a high-school administrator, guidance counselor, or college counselor is required and a letter of reference from an unrelated party (employer, clergy, coach, etc.) is also required. A letter of reference from the applicant's community newspaper publisher or editor may accompany the application, but this is not a requirement in order to be considered. If available, students may submit no more than three samples of Community Journalism or Ag Communications product, work or writing. Applications may be submitted through mail or email.
