The Charles Montgomery Gray Fellowship is a short-term fellowship supporting scholars who demonstrate a specific need for the Newberry collection. This fellowship is open to all fields of study, with preference given to projects in the early modern period or Renaissance, as well as in English history, legal history, or European history. Postdoctoral scholars and PhD candidates may apply. Graduate students must be ABD by the application deadline. A project abstract describing the significance of the project and a project description elaborating on the abstract and referencing specific published scholarship that the project will engage with are required. The description should also explain the relevance of certain Newberry collection materials to the project and include a plan of work. Letters of Recommendation, in English, that speak to the scholarly contribution of the proposed project, the value of a Newberry residency to the applicant, and the qualifications of the applicant.
