The Dorothy Porter Wesley Fellowship

Description

The Dorothy Porter Wesley Fellowship supports new and continuing research in the field of Black bibliography. Building on the Society's commitment to fostering inclusive bibliographical scholarship, this short-term fellowship may be used to pursue research in any geographical area and of any period. In addition to bibliographical analysis, projects may study the history of book or manuscript production, publishing, distribution, bookselling, collecting, and/or reading. Periodical and ephemera research projects are eligible, as are editorial projects seeking to establish a text. The fellowship honors the life and work of Dorothy Porter Wesley, an accomplished bibliographer and librarian, active member of the Bibliographical Society of America, and author of the influential PBSA article "Early American Negro Writings". Eligibility is limited to BAS members; US citizens and residents; and citizens of other nations without US residency who wish to conduct research outside of the United States only. Applicants must submit the project title; their curriculum vitae; and a project proposal that should include a statement of the project's broader significance, a description of the specific research the applicant plans to undertake with the support of a BSA fellowship, a description of the materials the applicant hopes to consult, and a brief budget and timeline for the proposed project. One letter of recommendation written by a person competent to judge the project's significance is also required. Applicants who have not received BSA fellowships in the previous five years will be given preference. Please visit the fellowship's website or contact the Bibliographical Society of America for more information.
