The Ecole Nationale des Chartes Exchange Fellowship allows one PhD candidate to spend a semester abroad at the Ecole Nationale des Chartes in Paris and one affiliate of the Ecole Nationale des Chartes to travel to Chicago to conduct research at the Newberry. To be eligible to study at the Ecole, applicants must be PhD candidates from a U.S. or Canadian university who have achieved ABD status by the application deadline. The fellowship covers auditor tuition and a portion of living expenses (up to one term) in Paris for a period of three months. Students, faculty members, and alumni of the Ecole Nationale des Chartes are eligible to apply for the exchange program to conduct research at the Newberry. A project abstract describing the significance of the project and a project description elaborating on the abstract and referencing specific published scholarship that the project will engage with are required. The description should also explain the relevance of certain Newberry collection materials to the project and include a plan of work. Letters of Recommendation, in English, that speak to the scholarly contribution of the proposed project, the value of a Newberry residency to the applicant, and the qualifications of the applicant.
