YoungArts Design Arts Award

Description

Design is one of 10 artistic disciplines in YoungArts' national competition. This discipline accepts portfolios in architecture, product, graphic, and fashion design (for fine art including multi-media and performance art, see the Visual Arts discipline). Applicants may either be a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident/green card recipient, or someone who can demonstrate that they are legally able to receive taxable income in the United States. Applicants must also be in grades 10-12 or 15-18 years of age on December 1 of the year they are applying. Designers are "agents of change." They re-imagine the world by creating new products, experiences and services. Within YoungArts, the Design discipline does not include illustration, comic book art, character design, coding or gaming design. This discipline is for designers who design for the "real world" in the following categories: Architectural Design, Product Design, UI/UX Design, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, and Cross-disciplinary Design. Applicants must submit a portfolio of ten individual pages of at least two projects that demonstrates the applicant's skills over the entire design process, from design research, to ideation, to design development, to finalization. Do not limit the images to only finished hero images. Sketches, models, renderings, collages, and videos are all acceptable and encouraged. Documentation of work should be of high quality, creative, innovative, and clearly show skill set. Applicants must also submit at least two of the ten pages/images that should show preliminary process images/sketches and/or preliminary models/mock-ups that specifically relate to the project's evolution and development. It is essential to demonstrate the inspiration, the editing process, and the applicant's skill as a craftsperson. If other people contributed to the final product, applicants must list them and their role and discuss the applicant's method of collaboration. A video showing more of the design process and/or showing the product/garment/object in use is also required. Please visit the award's website for more information about the competition and the required materials.
