Design is one of 10 artistic disciplines in YoungArts' national competition. Applicants may either be a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident or green card recipient, or can demonstrate that they are legally able to receive taxable income in the United States. Applicants must also be in grades 10-12 or 15-18 years of age on December 1 of the year they are applying. If selected as an award winner with distinction, this must be their first time attending the National YoungArts Week. Designers are "agents of change": They re-imagine our world by creating new products, experiences and services. Within YoungArts, the Design discipline does not include illustration, comic book art, character design, coding or gaming design. This discipline is for designers who design for the "real world" in the following categories: Architectural Design, which includes building, interior, landscape, environmental, set design; Product Design, which includes product, furniture, toy, vehicle design; UI/UX Design, which includes app, website, product interface; Graphic Design, which includes communication, packaging, book, signage; Fashion Design, which includes clothing, accessories, jewelry, costume; and Cross-disciplinary Design, which is a combination of any of the aforementioned categories. Applicants must submit the following within one of the specified design categories that were created within the last two years in the following order: Five pages of either one or two primary projects and a 2-minute max video documenting process; five pages of one to five additional projects; answers to artistic questions, which may be written or recorded via audio or video; and a "page" consisting of an image (or images) and text on a landscape slide that communicates a particular point in the design process. Submissions should clearly demonstrate skillset over the entire design process of each project from start to finish.
