Jazz is one of 10 artistic disciplines in YoungArts' national competition. This discipline is open to composers and instrumentalists. Applicants may either be a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident/green card recipient, or someone who can demonstrate that they are legally able to receive taxable income in the United States. Applicants must also be in grades 10-12 or 15-18 years of age on December 1 of the year they are applying. There are different requirements for submission of materials in each category of the competition. For Jazz - Composition, applicants must submit three original compositions written for small/large jazz ensembles that incorporate elements of traditional/contemporary jazz and include, but are not limited to, sections of improvisation. A digital video or audio recording and a printed score for each composition are required. For Jazz - Instrumental, electronic wind instruments will not be considered. Though a percussion instrument, vibraphone will not also be considered. Each selection should be close to three to five minutes in length. All should be played in combo format (minimum: piano or guitar, bass and drums) with either a live band or a pre-recorded format (these are preferred). The instrument to be judged should predominate.
