Jazz is one of 10 artistic disciplines in YoungArts' national competition. This discipline is open to composers and instrumentalists. Applicants must be in grades 10-12 or 15-18 years of age on December 1 of the year they are applying. Strong auditions showcase the artist's individual work, technical expertise, and unique and original sound. For the Composition category, three original compositions written for a small or large jazz ensemble that incorporate elements of traditional/contemporary jazz must be submitted. Include, but are not limited to, sections of improvisation. A digital video (preferred) or audio recording must be submitted. For the Instrumental category, a total of three individual digital video recordings that include the following and in the following order must be submitted: (A) One of the following 12-bar blues pieces composed by Charlie Parker: Billie's Bounce", "Chi Chi", or "Big Foot." (B) A jazz ballad of the applicant's choice which must include at least one chorus of solo. If submitting in Piano or Guitar, they must perform the entire selection solo, and should include a rubato section. No original compositions. (C) An up-tempo tune in any jazz style, except blues, at a tempo marking between 200 to 240 bpm and must include at least three choruses of solos. No original compositions. For the Percussion category, a total of three individual digital video recordings that include the following and in the following order must be submitted: (A) The 12-bar blues piece "Billie's Bounce" by Charlie Parker must be performed with a combo at tempo marking (quarter note equals 180). Audition must include playing time for two or more choruses behind a soloist and one or more choruses of a drum solo. (B) Perform (one) 1 Latin tune such as "Nica's Dream" or "Night in Tunisia." (C) An up-tempo tune in any jazz style, except blues. Must be performed at a tempo marking 240 bpm (quarter note equals 240) and must include at least three choruses of improvisations.
