Your Personal Statement

Are you prepared for the rigors of graduate-level study? Do you know who you are and what you're looking to accomplish? An admission committee will attempt to answer those questions while reading your personal statement.

Personal Statement Advice and Insight
The more time you put into your statement, the better it will be.

Key Elements
Test scores and college transcripts provide the statistical evidence of your worthiness as a student. The personal statement is the core qualitative component of your application. As they read, the admission committee will look for:

Insight into your character
A generic piece will not convince a program head that you're poised to contribute to and enhance the academic community. Focus on details that give a clear portrait of your goals and motivations.

Sincerity
For a moment, forget what you think the admission committee wants to see. Now start writing. Thousands of personal statements fail to do much beyond describing a cliched "ideal applicant." This isn't interesting, and it's not effective.

Background and motivation
You are aspiring to become a professional in your field. Make clear (without overdoing it) that you're aware of the current trends and issues, and touch upon what you hope to contribute.

Goals
An attractive applicant is a motivated applicant. Convey that you are self-assured and have a sense of direction.

Fit for the program
Without giving in to the temptation to lavish praise (and undermine succinctness) highlight how the attributes of the program appeal to you.

Writing ability
Your statement must be well written. If you're pursuing Bioengineering, you need not be the next Shakespeare. However, you do need to demonstrate intellectual clarity and attentiveness to detail. Write, rewrite, and proofread. If you're unsure, turn to someone you trust for help.

The personal statement is your one real chance to take control of your application. You know what makes you a great candidate. The trick is to submit a compelling piece of writing that will convince a committee that you're the right student for the job. Learn the Top 10 Personal Statement Mistakes
