Established in 1861, Chapman University is a private, coeducational university located in Orange, California and Irvine, California, in the western region of the United States.

The 2020 U.S. News & World Report ranks Chapman University as one of the best colleges in America and in 2019, Chapman University was ranked 5th among master’s-level universities in the Western U.S. 

The Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is a vibrant intellectual community, where student-faculty research, internships, community service, travel courses and study abroad are highly encouraged. Wilkinson College offers students six master’s degrees. 

The Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences sponsors enriching programs that showcase Chapman’s liberal arts program including Art Collections, Earl Babbie Research Center, Guggenheim Gallery, Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education, and The Writing Center

In Wilkinson, students will learn how to make a difference in the world around them. Students will study alongside dedicated and committed faculty. Outside the classroom, students have access to laboratories, internships and community service opportunities.

Wilkinson College has a distinguished faculty that is composed of active scholars, both nationally and internationally recognized for their academic excellence and contribution to knowledge. Wilkinson provides a challenging yet well-rounded education including the following programs: 

Master of Arts in English 

The Master of Arts in English is designed for students seeking continuing education, a foundation for doctoral work (PhD, EdD, JD) and/or a credential qualifying them to teach literature and composition courses at junior and community colleges.

Aimed at enabling students to receive the historical background, the writing confidence and the critical thinking skills to pursue careers in English or other humanistic endeavors.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

Whether you’re interested in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, screenwriting or a combination of genres, the MFA at Chapman University invites you to write better than you ever thought you could. The MFA is a terminal degree in creative writing.

Dual MA/MFA Degree 

The dual degree in English and creative writing provides the opportunity for both the literary and the creative aspects of English to be learned and assimilated. Combining the practice and study of creative writing with literary scholarship, the dual degree is specifically designed to meet your needs should your aspirations be to pursue a career in teaching English and creative writing at the university, community college or secondary school level.

Master of Arts in International Studies 

The International Studies program is designed to prepare graduates for a range of global careers with the U.S. Foreign Service, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), the United Nations (UN), and other global entities. The program provides an integrative curriculum including political science, comparative sociology, economics with an emphasis on trade and development, social psychology, foreign languages and other related fields.

Master of Arts in War and Society 

The M.A. in War and Society offers a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective on the lived experience and consequences of war by exploring theoretical frameworks and diverse archival materials including written, visual and oral historical evidence. Students master graduate-level writing, research and critical thinking skills to open up possible career paths in education, policy-making, museums, law, nonprofits and business.

Prospective students are encouraged to review the graduate application deadlines based on their particular graduate program. Programs that accept applications after the deadline on a space-available basis will be noted. Please visit the Application page to view a particular program application and requirements. 

A non-refundable application fee is $60 through the online application system. Students are required to submit all official transcripts; applications will not be considered complete until all materials are received. Most programs require a minimum of two letters of recommendation. Some programs require a statement of intent with specific information included in your statement.

Students interested in need-based financial aid should submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the California Dream Act Application

Students who would like to apply for need-based financial aid should submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in accordance with the application timelines. By submitting the FAFSA, each student is automatically considered for need-based grant and scholarship programs.
