MPA degree program focuses on helping people and working together
Though collaboration with community-based organizations, Binghamton University's Master of Public Administration degree program prepares students to be leaders and innovators in public service, government, and nonprofit agencies. Graduates engage in professional and community service, gaining practical, real-world experience and the theoretical framework needed to tackle societal issues. They make important contributions to communities and to the public-service profession.
Accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration, Binghamton's 42-credit-hour MPA degree program is flexible, enabling students to focus on their areas of interest. Students may pursue a graduate certificate in nonprofit management or a graduate certificate in local government management. Each requires an additional 15 credits. In addition, a specialization in sustainable communities is available for students wishing to shape their public administration career around the concept of sustainability.
Students also have the option of pursuing the MPA degree program as part of a dual-degree program, combining the Master of Public Administration degree program with a Master of Social Work degree, a Master of Science in Nursing degree, or a Master of Student Affairs Administration degree. With approximately 80 students and 11 faculty members, students in Binghamton's MPA degree program work closely with faculty members in the classroom and the community.
All MPA degree program students complete an internship and capstone course. Student interns apply lessons learned in the classroom in a real world setting, engaging in professional tasks and projects in areas such as policy, finance, management, strategy, programming, and administration. In the capstone course, students build on their internship experience by conducting research and producing a professional-quality analytical paper that addresses a demonstrated managerial or policy issue confronting the public or not-for-profit organization at the internship site (or at the student's place of employment if applicable). Final papers are presented to an audience and must be accepted by a faculty-agency committee.
Students connect during internships and unique international opportunities
Through internships, field placements, and research, Binghamton's Department of Public Administration helps meet the needs of populations in Binghamton, the surrounding area, and around the globe.
Binghamton students practice and promote giving through participation in the university's Philanthropy Incubator, established by David Campbell, MPA chair and associate professor. Students taking Campbell's philanthropy course receive funding to distribute to local nonprofit organizations as part of their coursework. Since the program began 5 years ago, students have distributed approximately $100,000 to Binghamton-area nonprofit organizations.
The program offers students a range of international study opportunities that are unusual to find in a MPA degree program. Binghamton students learn about problem solving around the world through collaborations with universities and projects in places such as China, Colombia, Peru, Turkey, and Hungary.

Work with professors who are leaders in the field
The Department of Public Administration brings together the energy and expertise of 11 faculty members who have active research agendas, strong records of community service, and growing national and international reputations. Among them are George Homsy, Nadia Rubaii, Susan Appe, and Pamela Mischen.
Assistant professor George Homsy is the recipient of a major research grant from the US Department of Agriculture to study rural sustainability. His project is examining how rural municipalities balance economic development and environmental protection, how local economic development policy has shifted since the recession, and rural communities' response to climate change and other environmental stresses.
Associate professor Nadia Rubaii recently completed a sabbatical as a Fulbright scholar in Colombia, studying the development of public administration education in South America. She is a prominent leader and former president of the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration.
Public administration assistant professor Susan Appe focuses her research on government-nonprofit relations and the evolution of the nonprofit sector in developed and developing countries. Among her current projects are an examination of how government policy influences and shapes civil society and nonprofit organizations; how and why nonprofit organizations form national-level networks and their implications; and the challenges in nonprofit management education, particularly in Latin America.
Associate professor Pamela Mischen manages the Center for Applied Community Research and Development, which works with regional community-based organizations on several types of projects. These include a $300,000 grant to examine childhood obesity prevention strategies at a neighborhood level.
