Frank and Virginia Winker Memorial Scholarship for Graduate Study in Acoustics

Description

The Frank and Virginia Winker Memorial Scholarship for Graduate Study in Acoustics has been established through a generous donation by The Elizabeth L. and Russell F. Hallberg Foundation and Douglas F. Winker to the Acoustical Society of America to support graduate study in the fields of architectural acoustics noise control, or engineering acoustics. Membership in ASA is not required. Applicants must be enrolled in any college or university in the United States and must be pursuing research toward a graduate thesis project in Architectural Acoustics, Noise Control, or Engineering Acoustics. Engineering Acoustics, for the purposes of the Winker Scholarship, includes: Applications of linear and nonlinear acoustics, transduction and transducers, acoustical measurements, instrumentation, and applications of signal processing to any of the aforementioned areas. Qualification for the Scholarship requires submission of an application form with a description of a planned course of study including the reasons why this field of study is being pursued. Three reference letters shall also be submitted from persons familiar with the student's work. One letter shall be from the student's graduate advisor or major professor. At least one of the other two letters shall be from an associate or full member of the Acoustical Society of America. The recipient of the scholarship will be that individual who, through personal qualifications and a proposed research topic, is judged to exhibit the highest potential for performing work benefitting the science of acoustics and the study of sound and promoting its usefulness to society.
