Description

The HOPE Scholarship tax credit attempts to make the first two years of college more affordable. Students receive a 100% tax credit for the first $1,000 paid for tuition and fees minus grants, scholarships, and other tax-free educational assistance. This credit is phased out for joint filers who have an adjusted gross income between $80,000 and $100,000, and for single filers who have an adjusted gross income between $40,000 and $50,000. Students who are in their first two years of college and enrolled on at least a half-time basis in a degree or certificate program can claim the credit for two years. The taxpayer can claim a credit for his own, his or her spouse's or dependent childrens' tuition expenses.
