Social Justice Scholarship

Description

This scholarship was established by a Menlo-Atherton High School student who is passionate about supporting immigrants as a social justice effort. She established this fund in 2004 in honor of her mother , Julia Villarroel, who is a Bolivian immigrant and dedicated her life to working hard and loving her children. Her daughter hopes that her memory and legacy of love and dedication will live on through this scholarship. The scholarship is intended to support students who express and demonstrate interest in and activities towards social justice cause, especially in support of immigrants. The scholarship is available to all students regardless of citizenship status. First generation and undocumented students are encouraged to apply. Preferred applicants will have a demonstrated interest in immigrant-oriented social justice AND/OR are an immigrant themselves AND/OR were raised in a first-generation immigrant family. Current graduating senior of a school in the Sequoia Union High School District or East Side College Preparatory in East Palo Alto, CA. Planning to enroll in a two- or four-year college or university on a full- or part-time basis (minimum of 6 units required). Demonstrated interest in social justice issues and desire to continue to be involved in social justice efforts during college. Examples of demonstrated interest include community service, school activities, and leadership opportunities taken over their high school career. Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5. Demonstrated financial hardship. Please submit all complete applications and any questions by email to: social.justice.for.immigrants@gmail.com. All applications must include an official or unofficial high school transcript. Evidence of financial need must be submitted with all application packets. If you applied for federal financial aid, enclose a copy of the summary of your answers to the FAFSA and your EFC. If possible, also include all pages of your Student Aid Report (SAR). (Updated information regarding your FAFSA application can be found online at www.fafsa.ed.gov/). Enclose a summary of information from your CA Dream ACT application that includes your EFC. If you did not apply for federal financial aid or CA Dream ACT, enclose a copy of the first two pages of your parentÔÇÖs or guardianÔÇÖs most recent Tax Form 1040 (or your own if you are not a dependent) and a brief explanation of why you did not apply for government or CA Dream ACT financial aid. ÔÇó You may include copies of letters of recommendation or have your recommender send us their recommendation directly. These are helpful in giving the selection committee more information about you. ÔÇó You may include personal statements written for other scholarship or university applications. These are helpful in giving the selection committee more information about you. ÔÇó You may include a written Explanation of Financial Situation describing any special circumstance that may affect you or your familyÔÇÖs ability to pay for college, or anything you would like us to know explaining your financial situation (medical, divorce, unemployment, child support, remittances/supporting other family members financially, extensive debt, etc. other).
