Thomas L. McKenzie Research Award

Description

The Thomas L. McKenzie Research Award promotes the development of future researchers in the field of physical education, physical activity, and public health. To support this purpose, SHAPE America will provide one or more annual awards to graduate students or early career professionals (within 4 years of graduation) who are members of SHAPE America. Primary consideration will be given to the study of physical activity in natural environments such as schools, parks, and home settings (not laboratories) and as it relates to disease prevention (not rehabilitation). Funds will be used for the study of behavior, not mentalistic (e.g., self-concept, literacy) or biological (e.g., heart rate, cholesterol) outcomes. Studies can relate to the promotion of physical activity at the individual, group, or societal (e.g., policy) level. The research abstract must include the: (a) Purpose - include the hypothesis and/or research question(s) as appropriate; also significance and relationship to grant program purposes. Note that although interdisciplinary and collaborative research is encouraged and valued, they are not requirements for the grant program. (b) Background Literature and Theoretical Framework as applicable to the project. (c) Proposed Design and Methodology. (d) Qualitative and/or Quantitative Analysis Plan. Applicants must also submit a statement written by the faculty sponsor addressing the student and sponsor/advisor's roles; how the student would make a unique contribution to research through the proposed project; and the student's capability to conduct the proposed research. Please visit the award's website for more information.
