Theater is one of 10 artistic disciplines in YoungArts' national competition. This discipline accepts applications inclusive of classical and contemporary spoken monologues as well as optional musical theater song selections. Applicants must be in grades 10-12 or 15-18 years of age on December 1 of the year they are applying. The strongest auditions demonstrate range, a commitment to craft, dexterity of language and illustrate the actor's ability to make clear, nuanced performance choices that best showcase their distinct voice. For Spoken Only audition, applicants must submit two separate digital video recorded monologues for theater (not film) to include the following and in the following order: (A) One contemporary monologue from a play (not a musical) written during or after the 1950's on. (B) One classical monologue from a play written before 1950. We are looking for elevated or stylized text. Some examples are (but not limited to) Shakespeare, Chekov, Ibsen, Shaw, the Greek comedies and tragedies etc. For Musical Theater, please submit either the following: (A) Two separate digital video recorded contrasting song selections showing arcs of the character with a beginning, middle, and end. (1) One legit style song from the musical theater canon, Standard Broadway repertoire. (2) One song from a contemporary musical theatre show or a published contemporary piece (rock, pop, hip-hop, jazz, gospel, country, etc). (B) One contemporary monologue from a play (not a musical) written during or after the 1950's. Please visit the award's website for more information.
