Voice is one of 10 artistic disciplines in YoungArts' national competition. This discipline encompasses classical, jazz, popular voice and singer-songwriter. Applicants must be in grades 10-12 or 15-18 years of age on December 1 of the year they are applying. Strong auditions should demonstrate a mastery of technique, the ability to connect to material with a unique personal style, and the ability to convey the ideas, themes, and narrative of each song. For the Classical category, applicants must submit a total of three individual digital video recordings to include the following and in the following order: (A) One art song from any time period. (B) A song or aria selection of the applicant's choice. (C) One art song or aria in Italian from any period. For the Jazz category, applicants must submit a total of three individual digital video recordings to include the following and in the following order: (A) A jazz ballad. (B) A medium or up-tempo swing or a Bossa Nova tune. (C) A Bebop or Blues tune. For the Popular (Pop) category, applicants must submit a total of three individual digital video recordings in English (preferred) to include the following and in the following order: (A) One ballad selection in any style the applicant chooses. The song should be written in 1980 or after. (B) One up tempo selection in any style you choose. The song should be written in 1980 or after. (C) One popular song written between 1950-1979. Please do not include Great American Songwriting. For the Singer-Songwriter category, applicants must submit a performance of three original songs in English. Self-produced tracks may be used. Tracks must be 100 perfect originally produced by the applicant and may not include any unlicensed samples. A PDF document of the lyrics for each of the songs must be submitted.
