Overview

Accelerated RN-BSN Program at Holy Family University

Holy Family University, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a Roman Catholic liberal arts university founded in 1954 by the Congregation of the Sisters of Nazareth. Holy Family University has 4 academic schools: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Nursing and Allied Health Professions. The university's current student population across the schools totals about 3,100 undergraduates and graduates.

"US News and World Report Best Colleges" ranks Holy Family University 112 among top regional universities (North) and 390 among the nation's top graduate nursing program. In addition, Holy Family nursing students' first-time pass rate of 93.62% on the NCLEX-RN ranks higher than the national average.

Holy Family's graduate nursing programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Accelerated BSN Overview

The undergraduate program in nursing at Holy Family University is designed to meet global healthcare needs, prepare students to practice as nurse generalists, and provide a foundation for graduate study in nursing. The nursing program is accredited by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education (CCNE), and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Offered through Holy Family University's Division of Extended Learning, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing accelerated degree (BSN) is a part-time program for working adults with associate degrees in nursing, or diploma-prepared registered nurses interested in completing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. The program is recognized locally for its affordability, accessibility, and convenience. Flexible scheduling includes classes that meet once a week, in the evenings, afternoon, Saturday, or online, for 5 weeks.

The RN-BSN curriculum emphasizes development of management and leadership skills, culture-sensitive health care, individual and family assessment skills, and research in nursing practice. Courses reflect current theories and practices that impact the world of nursing in today's society. Students work with qualified preceptors under the supervision and guidance of Holy Family University nursing faculty members. Clinical hours are established at a mutually beneficial time to support the needs of adult learners while fulfilling course objectives. A current RN license is a prerequisite for enrollment in clinical courses.

Transfer Policy and Admission

A total of 84 credits from university or hospital based nursing education programs may be transferred into the program without transfer fees, including 39 credits awarded for a current nursing license. All prior learning is validated through individual conference and evaluation. Students transferring in the maximum amount of credits may be able to complete the program in as little as 15 months.

In addition to the completed application, fee, and official transcripts from all universities attended, each applicant must submit a copy of their nursing license, 2 letters of reference, and a writing sample.

BSN Curriculum of Study

The program comprises 45 general education requirements, 39 concentration credits, and the 39-credit nursing license. Students take required general education courses in English, humanities, general psychology, business statistics, and electives in social science, philosophy, natural science, religious studies and cross-cultural studies.

Concentration requirements for the BSN are "Anatomy and Physiology I and II," "Microbiology," "Nursing-Family Assessment," "Psychology of Human Development," "Nursing-Culture and Healthcare," "Nursing-Research in Nursing Practice," "Nursing-Leadership in Nursing Practice," "Nursing-Contemporary Issues in Nursing," "Nursing-Quality and Patient Safety," and "Nursing-Community Health I and II."

The program's clinical component comprises 2 practica focused on community-based healthcare, where the development and implementation of aggregate-based assessment and intervention strategies are studied and applied to real-world environments. Students also complete comprehensive exams.

Small Classes, Dedicated Faculty

The student-faculty member ratio at Holy Family University is 12:1, and the school has 73.2 % of its classes with fewer than 20 students. The School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions employs 20 fulltime nursing faculty members, all of whom bring real world clinical experience to the classroom.

Professor of Nursing Boas Yu recently presented "The Effect of Meditation on Power and Well-Being" at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Conference and "Transforming Leadership to Achieve a Culture of Oneness" at the Sigma Theta Tau International Leadership Forum.

More than 85% of Holy Family University undergraduates receive financial aid in some form. Financial aid is available in the form of federal and state loans, institutional grants and scholarships, merit awards, student employment, and other private sources. Students seeking financial aid are encouraged to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA) when applying for admission.
