The Art Institute of Portland

The city of Portland has boundaries. They're perfectly visible on any map. Those looking to push boundaries, however, will find an opportunity much closer to home than the city limits. At The Art Institute of Portland, students are invited to rock the boat, defy convention, and challenge the status quo each and every day. For those who are ready to claim their place here, the big red "Ai" atop the Art Institute's building will light the way to a challenging, collaborative, creative education.

At The Art Institute of Portland, students can choose from bachelor's and associate's degree programs--as well as non-degree programs--in one of eight competitive areas of study: Visual Design, Interior & Product Design, Marketing, Animation & Effects, Film & Production, Gaming & Technology, Fashion, or Culinary. The experience is challenging, the lessons are hands-on, and the journey leads toward one specific destination: a career in the creative arts.

Along the way, talented instructors bring real world experience* to the classroom. And in those classrooms, students are greeted by tools, technology, and software not unlike the pros use. When it's all said and done, graduates can leave The Art Institute of Portland with more than a portfolio. They can also come away with the confidence it takes to turn their creative passion into a fulfilling career.

Accreditation and Licensing

Visual arts, a vibrant music scene, endless outdoor recreation opportunities, cool restaurants, retail stores, and hangouts: Portland, Oregon, is a thriving metropolis that keeps the creative spirit alive. This is a city where art, music, fashion, film, and food are just as hip as the lifestyles of the creative individuals who make their home here.

The surrounding area, including the Willamette River, Columbia River Gorge, and the snow-capped peak of Mount Hood--home of America's longest ski season--is a mecca for bicyclists, wind surfers, snow boarders, skiers, ice climbers, and hikers. Forest Park covers more than 5,000 acres. Washington Park is home to the Oregon Zoo. And Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park runs the length of downtown along the west bank of the Willamette River.

Portland is well-known for its forward-thinking urban planning and use of land. Due largely to the city's investment in light rail, Portland has been called one of the greenest cities in the world. The city is also referred to as "City of Roses" because its climate is perfect for growing that particular flower and "City of Bridges" because of the many spans that carry its streets across its rivers.

Students find the city's largest art collection at the Portland Art Museum. There are many more art galleries downtown and in neighborhoods throughout the city. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) sits on the eastern bank of the Willamette, across from downtown.

Portland boasts a wide array of dining options, indoors and out, to suit every budget and every taste--even if it's just a hot dog while watching the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers play basketball at the Moda Center.

Academic Facilities

Ask a student at The Art Institute of Portland what he or she learned in school today and there's no telling what the answer will be. In classrooms that feel more like studios, sound stages, kitchens, and laboratories, students aren't just taught from textbooks, but with tools--many of which are identical to what industry professionals use. It's all part of preparing students to hit the ground running once they graduate.

Actual tuition and housing costs will vary depending on program, number of credits enrolled, and living arrangements. Prospective students should contact a Student Financial Services professional at the school for details.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Students who require financial assistance should first complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at and meet with a financial aid officer. Students may also apply for a number of scholarships focusing on their specific areas of career interest.

The instructors at The Art Institute of Portland tend to have something in common. Curious what it is? Just look at their résumés--their job histories outside the classroom. That's right, many of the faculty members here bring real-world experience* to the classroom. And that's what makes these instructors so special: their lessons are grounded in reality. It's the type of teaching that can help prepare students for their career before they even land that first job interview.
