Master of Arts in Philosophical Studies

The Master of Arts in Philosophical Studies program at Liberty University is a 36-hour, two-year program designed to help students develop research skills, advance in understanding of classical and contemporary philosophical and cultural arguments and analysis, and enhance current ministerial or occupational ability. This research-based program provides preparation for pursuing a doctoral degree or a career within academia. Career opportunities include apologist, theologian, professor, author, journalist, hospital ethicist, politician, and pastor. The program requires a thesis project.

Master of Arts in Philosophical Studies

Students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Philosophical Studies program can also participate in the Philosophy Club. The Philosophy Club meets throughout the year, as does the Ratio Christi, Liberty's chapter of the national apologetics organization. These groups provide opportunities for philosophical discovery and growth outside the classroom. Students can also join Phi Sigma Tau, the national honor society for philosophy. Students seeking membership should belong to the Philosophy Club and have an outstanding academic record.

Faculty

Students in this program can take a course with Dr. Gary Habermas, a leading expert on the resurrection of Jesus. Habermas has authored or edited 37 books, contributed more than sixty chapters or articles to countless others, and published well over 100 articles or reviews in journals and other publications. He has been involved in several debates with prominent atheists of the 20th Century, including Antony Flew and Arif Ahmed from Oxford. Students also learn from Dr. Edward Martin, director of the Master of Arts in Philosophical Studies program. Martin has contributed several articles and book chapters on topics such as the problem of evil, empiricism, the remarkable renaissance of Christian philosophy in the 20th century, and suffering and soul-making. Martin is currently researching Kant and the cosmo-teleological argument (also known as the fine-tuning argument).

Out of country travel

Additionally, the Philosophy Department at Liberty University offers an annual trip to Europe for academic credit or personal enrichment. During the last two years, the department has traveled to Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, and France on a CS Lewis study tour. Students are encouraged to attend regional and national conventions (such as the Evangelical Philosophical Society), give papers, and act as respondents to other papers at conferences for both undergraduate and graduate students.
