Program Overview

The Environmental Science and Policy (ES&P) program prepares students for a range of emerging environmental careers at the intersection of science and policy. ES&P equips students with skills and perspectives to work with a wide array of stakeholders -- communities, industries, governmental agencies, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, researchers, and donors -- in ways that are sensitive to cultural, institutional, socio-political, and economic needs.

Environmental career trends show that employers worldwide seek critical thinkers and doers who champion sustainable solutions that are ecologically responsible, economically feasible, and socio-politically desirable; ES&P trains students to meet this growing demand for environmental professionals.

Through coursework, group projects, internships, and extracurricular activities, ES&P encourages students to frequently cross boundaries between being scholars and practitioners, between acting practically and idealistically, between thinking theoretically and empirically, and between focusing on natural and social sciences.

Faculty research interests include transitions in socio-technical system toward sustainability; sustainable consumption and production; environmental regulation of industry; how humans change the environment, and how those changes impact their health, wellbeing, and natural resources; environmental epidemiology; social epidemiology; urbanization and health, particularly chronic diseases; the health effects of climate change; the development and use of analytical methods and mathematical models to aid the decision process for environmental assessment and management; climate change mitigation and accelerating a societal transition toward sustainability; sustainable development, with emphasis on global climate change; uncertainties in estimating health effects risks, especially for radiation; and cooperation between scientists and non-scientists in risk assessment.

Specialty Program and Degree Opportunities

IDCE offers a dual degree program with Clark's Graduate School of Management.

Innovations in technologies and services provided by entrepreneurs and corporations are becoming integral to making a transition to a more sustainable world, and to building the "green collar economy" of the future. Non-governmental organizations, traditionally key partners with governments in pursuing environmental goals, are increasingly collaborating with the business world to address sustainability challenges. These organizations need employees with strong management and strategic planning skills, technical skills (like GIS and data analysis), an entrepreneurial spirit, as well as an understanding of the complexities of environmental science and policy. Graduates of the ES&P/MBA dual degree program may pursue jobs in environmental consulting, entrepreneurial environmental leadership, sustainable technology businesses (including renewable energy systems), nonprofit operations and management, corporate sustainability, and others.

Graduate Student Experience

Clark University is located in Worcester, Massachusetts, and its central location in the state makes it an easy base for exploring the nearby cities of Boston and Providence, or for going North and West into other parts of New England. The student community of IDCE and Clark is inclusive and supportive, with many students living very close to campus and creating peer and friend networks that help them thrive in the graduate school environment. Frequent social events are planned by fellow students, as well as excursions to interesting destinations outside of Worcester on weekends. Overall, living expenses tend to be less as compared to places like Boston, and the nature of the IDCE community contributes to Worcester being a great place to live and study.

Tuition/Scholarships/Financial Aid

More than 80% of IDCE students do receive some form of merit based partial financial aid toward tuition. IDCE is able to offer some fellowships to outstanding applicants, ranging from 40% to 100% tuition remission. Additionally, IDCE recognizes the merit of national service by awarding any former AmeriCorps members, Teach for America alumni, or City Year alumni at least 40% tuition remission. Any Returned Peace Corps Volunteers are also awarded at least 40% tuition remission if accepted to any IDCE program.
