Early Internships Give QU Teaching Students Practical ExperienceThe robust Master of Arts in Teaching courses prepare students with the perspectives, knowledge, skills, and student teaching experiences to become exemplary teachers. Thanks to Quinnipiac's collaborative partnerships with school districts throughout Connecticut, graduate students participate in invaluable internships during the first two semesters of the program, with the option of a second internship during the final two semesters. As interns, students serve in a variety of capacities and as substitute teachers. They participate in staff meetings and all school operations. During the internship semesters, graduate students continue their formal studies back on campus in the late afternoons and early evenings. In addition to the invaluable hands-on experience of internships, students enjoy a substantial reduction on tuition costs during those semesters. During the final months of the master's program, all teacher candidates begin a 10-week student teaching placement during which they demonstrate the skills, understanding, and dispositions needed to assume full responsibilities as a classroom teacher.
Connecticut Certification Gives Teachers Mobility to Teach in Many StatesThe state of Connecticut participates in the NASDTEC Interstate Compact; each state in the compact agrees to accept the planned program of study for graduates of an accredited teacher preparation program in any of the participating states in the compact. As a result, graduates with Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education (K-6) or Secondary Education (7-12) from Quinnipiac University have the ability to easily teach in a variety of states.
QU Offers a Five-Semester Elementary Education Master's ProgramThe 57-credit Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) curriculum leads to elementary education certification for teaching students in grades K-6. Graduates of the program will be able to integrate knowledge of content, knowledge of the learner, and knowledge of pedagogy in order to promote student learning. The M.A.T. in Elementary Education's graduate curricula includes such courses as: Learning and Teaching in the Elementary Classroom; Cultivation, Design, and Management of an Elementary Classroom; Philosophy of Education; Issues and Research in Education; and Facilitating the Arts in the Classroom. Individual courses focus on teaching specific K-6 courses in reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Five-Semester MAT Degree in Secondary Education Available at QuinnipiacQU's Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education curriculum is an intensive 52- to 56-credit program that begins in the fall semester and includes core courses for teacher certification eligibility, advanced content courses which satisfy master's degree requirements, and the internship experience. Students who qualify for the M.A.T. in Secondary Education graduate program must have a B.A. degree with a major, or a minimum of 30 credits, in biology or biomedical sciences, English, history, mathematics, science, or one of the social sciences. Secondary education courses include Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum, Adolescent Development, Diversity in the Classroom, Special Education, and Health Education. Individual courses focus on teaching specific grade 7-12 courses in biology, English, history/social studies, mathematics, and languages.
Educational Leadership Master's Degree Program Helps Teachers Pursue School Administration RolesQuinnipiac University's 30-credit Master of Arts in Teaching in Educational Leadership is designed for certified, working teachers who have a master's degree and a minimum of four years of full-time PK-12 educational experience and are interested in pursuing school leadership and school administration roles such as department chair, assistant principal, principal, curriculum coordinator, and central office administrator. Recognizing the busy schedules of working teachers, educational leadership classes are held late afternoons and early evenings and also incorporate online lessons. Students are required to take six courses, participate in a professional internship, and pass the Connecticut Administrator Test (CAT). After passing the CAT, and completing the first 21 credits of the program, students are eligible for the Connecticut Department of Education's Intermediate Administration or Supervision certificate. After completing the final three courses in the educational leadership curriculum, students receive the M.A.T. in Educational Leadership.
