The civil service, also known as the public sector, encompasses a large number of different industries, professional fields, and requires skills from no education to highly qualified and educated applicants. Those who want to work in construction, the National Forest Service, Post Office, a university, library, museum, or any other public sector job, can find a rewarding and successful career working as a civil servant.

There are many ways to go about finding a civil service job, and you should know what to look out for when finding a job announcement that interests you.

What are job announcements?

When the federal government has a position that needs to be filled, they are required in some circumstances to post a job announcement to the public or a certain professional and personal background. These job announcements will include work requirements, salary, duties, and location. It will also tell you about application deadlines, special requirements, and if you need to take a test and what experience you need to qualify.

Study the announcement carefully and read it a couple of times so you know exactly what you are applying for and what you will need to submit along with your application in order to be considered for the job. This information will be under the “Description of Work” section, and will help you get a sense of what you need to do to be successful in that job.

Determining your qualifications

Though your experience doesn’t need to be an exact match for the requirements, you should be sure that you can at least justify why you are a qualified applicant in your application and resume. For example, some jobs will require that you have a certain number of years of academic experience, but they also will sometimes allow you to substitute a certain number of years working in that field for the education.

Preparing for the civil service exam

If you are required to take a test, the job announcement will let you know what to prepare for in advance of submitting your application. This test will likely be the civil service exam, but can also be an exam to assess your abilities to perform the job duties outlined in the job announcement. There will also sometimes be sample questions and describe the method of testing the exam. Be sure to prepare for the exam no matter the case. You will absolutely have to pass in order to be considered for the job.
