Program of StudyThe Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (M.S.P.A.S.) degree program at South University is an intensive twenty-seven-month curriculum structured around full-time course work. With students applying from across the country through the national Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) system, South University routinely attracts students who have received their undergraduate education at major public universities. The program focuses on the study of pathology, physiology, epidemiology, pharmacology, diagnosis, patient management, and treatment. Students learn in small groups with on-site laboratories where individualized attention is delivered by faculty members who have a variety of both professional and teaching experience. Within the first months of the program, students begin to gain experience in clinical and surgical settings. Program graduates are qualified to take the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) exam. Once certified, graduates are prepared to work in internal medicine and family practice or specialty areas such as OB/GYN, pediatrics, surgery, orthopedics, postoperative care, cardiology, and many other specialties. In these areas, graduates may examine and treat patients, order and interpret lab results and X-rays, make diagnoses, prescribe medications, and take medical histories. They may also treat minor injuries, counsel patients, and carry out therapy instructions.
