Master of Social Work at Anna Maria College

Starting in the fall of 2017, Anna Maria College will offer a Master of Social Work (MSW) program to prepare students for advanced generalist practice in the following areas:

- Administration in social work

- Child welfare services

- Crisis centers

- Geriatrics

- Hospice

- Marriage and family counseling

- Medical social work

- Psychiatric social work

- School social work

- Teen counseling

The college is in the process of obtaining accreditation for the program from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Because its Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program has received continuous accreditation since the college's founding in 1974, it expects the MSW program to be accredited. To date, the program has successfully met all of CSWE's requirements. The organization is expected to meet February 28, 2018 to vote on approving it for candidacy status.

MSW curriculum

The 62-credit MSW curriculum will follow the cohort model, so students will enter and complete the program together. They will take 20 courses including 10 required courses, at least three elective courses, and as many as seven concentration or advanced standing courses.

Students can earn their degrees in two years of full-time study or three years of part-time study. Students with BSW degrees may qualify for advanced placement, which involves completing 30 or more credits in three semesters (fall, spring, and summer). Classes will take place during weeknights and on weekends in Paxton, Massachusetts.

Required and elective courses

Required courses, which are taken during the foundation year, are listed below.

- "Social Work and Practice"

- "Integrated Seminar - I (Applied Research)"

Field placements

The MSW curriculum is "uniquely designed" for students to take classes while doing fieldwork. This will give them the opportunity to apply what they've learned during the program instead of at the end of it.

Field assignments will take place at a wide-range of social service agencies throughout central Massachusetts and other locales. This will give students the opportunity to work with diverse populations. Students who work at social service agencies may be able to complete their fieldwork at their places of employment.

Social work faculty members use their expertise to advance the field of social work practice and education. As both scholars and practitioners, they offer students advanced theoretical and practical knowledge.

Professor Jude Gonsalvez is the Associate Dean and Director of Social Work. His research interests include organizational behavior, problems associated with adult children of alcoholics, issues concerning night shift workers, resiliency among women survivors of the 2004 Tsunami, and social skills therapy for alcoholics.

Employment opportunities

An MSW from Anna Maria College prepares students for exciting and fulfilling careers in a number of settings including the following:

- Elementary and secondary schools

- Hospitals and treatment centers

- Local, state, and federal governments

- Nonprofit organizations

- Nursing homes

- Prisons and correctional facilities

- Social service agencies

Upon graduation, students will enter a favorable job market. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that overall employment of social workers will grow 12% from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than the average for all professions.

More specifically, employment of school, family, and child social workers is expected to grow 6%, which is as fast as the average for all professions. Employment of healthcare, mental healthcare, and substance abuse social workers is expected to increase 19%, which is much faster than the average for all professions. Increased demand for social services and healthcare will fuel this growth.

Anna Maria College

In 1946, the Sisters of Saint Anne founded Anna Maria College to provide quality higher education for women who were less fortunate. Today, the college provides values-based, career-oriented, and service-focused liberal arts education for 1,500 women and men annually. Small class sizes, co-curricular activities, and accessible faculty members enhance the college's rigorous undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs.

Anna Maria College is located in Paxton, Massachusetts in the northeastern region of the United States. The campus offers an array of cultural, recreational, social, spiritual, and educational activities.

Its close proximity to Worcester, a college town of approximately 181,000 residents provides even more recreational options. Art exhibits at the Worcester Art Museum, concerts at the Palladium, dining at downtown restaurants, and skiing at Wachusett Mountain are just some of what the Worcester area offers.
