Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature

The Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature at Stony Brook awards the Master of Arts in Hispanic languages and literature, the Master of Arts in Romance languages, Master of Arts in teaching, and the Ph.D. in Spanish, Latin American, and U.S. Latino literature. The program focuses on all aspects of Spanish, Latin American, and U.S. Latino literature and culture and their relationship with other cultures. The goals are to offer graduate students the opportunity to conduct theoretically advanced research and develop the necessary analytical and professional skills to pursue a successful career in their specialty. The Department places great emphasis on extensive faculty-student contact outside the classroom. The Department's internationally recognized faculty members work individually with graduate students to provide research materials and professional advice on scholarly publishing, conference papers, job searches, and all other aspects that prepare them for an academic career at the four-year college or research university level, or for other professional careers in humanistic study, research, and writing.

The program offers an integrated curriculum of courses and seminars together with individual reading and research courses. New Ph.D. students take 12 credits the first two semesters, 9 credits in each semester of the second year (or after completing 24 graduate credits), 6 credits in each semester of the third year, while the fourth year normally is dedicated to passing the comprehensive exam and writing a dissertation. At the beginning of the second year, Ph.D. students must pass a qualifying exam, and at the beginning of the spring semester of the third year, they must pass a comprehensive exam. The average duration of the program is four to five years. For M.A. students, three or four semesters of full-time course work is required. For students with an M.A. or its equivalent, a minimum of two consecutive semesters of full-time graduate study in residence is required. The Department believes that learning to teach is an integral part of any graduate program. All graduate students are required to teach 3 to 5 hours a week and are carefully trained and supervised by the Director of Language Instruction and other members of the Department.

Research Facilities

Graduate students have full access to educational facilities designed to encourage and further their research and teaching efforts. The Department is located in the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library near the main entrance to the book stacks and adjacent to the offices of faculty members and graduate students. Graduate student offices are equipped with Internet access, and computers are available both in the students' offices and in the graduate student resource room. Also in the library is the Language and Learning Research Center, a state-of-the-art facility devoted to language acquisition in its broadest sense and research in language acquisition. The Center offers graduate-level courses on the intersection between language learning and technology and hosts workshops in language pedagogy. The Spanish language and Spanish and Latin American literatures collection of the library comprises approximately 59,200 volumes. The collection is growing at the rate of nearly 1,400 volumes annually. The Department of Special Collections houses quantities of scarce or unique items of extreme value, including the Amunategui Collection (early nineteenth century), the Columbine (2,000 volumes on Columbus, the discovery of America, and Americus Vespucius), and the Biblioteca Natan from Mexico. Students have round-the-clock access to a state-of-the-art computer facility located adjacent to the Department offices.

Student Group

Nearly 60 full- and part-time graduate students were enrolled in spring 2005. Of these, 20 were teaching assistants and 3 were W. Burghardt Turner Fellowship recipients. Maintaining an ethnically and regionally diverse student body and faculty is a priority for the Department.

The Department is also proud of its postdoctoral placements. Recent graduates have been placed at the University of Connecticut, Marquette University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Brandeis University, Barnard College, University of Texas, Catholic University of Chile, University of Sao Paulo, and the University of Seville.

The University and The Department

Although a relatively young university, Stony Brook is quickly becoming a prestigious research institution. The recent invitation to join the Alliance of American Universities shows the recognition of the high quality of the faculty members and students. The Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature has established a climate of cooperation with other departments, maintaining ongoing programmatic links with women's studies, film studies, comparative literature, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center, the Humanities Institute, and the American Studies Initiative.
