Online Doctor of Health Sciences at the University of Bridgeport

The Doctor of Health Sciences at the University of Bridgeport focuses on qualitative and quantitative research. It also allows students to improve their skills in education and curriculum development, evidence-informed care delivery, public health, and research. The program includes these elements:

Doctor of Health Sciences (DHSc) curriculum

The 61-credit DHSc has 18 credits of core courses, 12 credits of concentration courses, 18 credits of elective courses, and 13 credits of dissertation and seminar courses. Students attend a one-week residency at the end of the program. They can select one of two concentrations: health care clinician and health care education.

The health care clinician concentration trains students to become leaders in the complex and constantly changing health care environment. It emphasizes evidence-informed care delivery, public health, and research. It has four courses: "Advanced Disease Processes and Treatment," "Lifestyle and Health Issues," "Health Promotion and Disease Prevention," and "Integrative and Complementary Medicine."

The health care education concentration focuses on education, leadership, and research. It gives students the tools to become successful college professors in the health sciences. It consists of

coursework in Teaching in the Health Professions, Educational Assessment, Curriculum and Syllabus Development in Higher Education, and Pedagogy and Teaching Strategies for College Instructors.

The Clinical Nutrition Concentration will review functional nutritional assessment and intervention applications of the major chronic diseases of our culture through evidence-based research. This track contains four courses covering all the major disease states and their current nutritional and supplemental intervention strategies. Students will critically assess and evaluate these interventions and will hypothesize, design and upgrade current intervention strategies from a functional nutritional perspective.

DHSc learning outcomes

Upon graduation, DHSc students will have the ability to successfully undertake the following tasks:

- Analyze and impact public policy concerning health care services

- Effectively use evidence to support best practices regarding clinical decision-making

- Integrate evidence-based complementary medical modalities into health care delivery

- Successfully manage a health care facility or practice

Admissions requirements

Prerequisites for entering the Doctor of Health Sciences program at the University of Bridgeport are as follows:

- A master's degree from a regionally-accredited institution with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 or a first professional doctoral degree in a professionally-accredited program from a regionally-accredited institution

- Health care experience, licensure, or professional credentials in a health-related field (preferred)
