John Carter Brown Library Fellowship Program

Description

The John Carter Brown Library will award approximately forty residential research fellowships for the year July 1, 2021ÔÇôJune 30, 2022. Sponsorship of research at the John Carter Brown Library is reserved exclusively for scholars whose work is centered on the colonial history of the Americas, North and South, including all aspects of European, African, and Native American engagements in global and comparative contexts. Short-term John Carter Brown Library Fellowships are available for periods of two to four months and carry a stipend of $2,250 per month. These fellowships are open to individuals who are engaged in pre- and post-doctoral, or independent research, regardless of nationality. Graduate students must have passed their preliminary or general examinations at the time of application. Long-Term Fellowships are for five to ten months with a monthly stipend of $5,000. In response to the unprecedented challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, the John Carter Brown Library will offer for the first time a digital (or remote) fellowship option for sponsored researchers, beginning in the fall of 2020. At this time, short-term fellows who had planned to be in residence between July and December 2020 may request to take a digital fellowship. The monthly stipend for digital fellowships will be $1500, reduced from $2100 due to a diminished need for travel and lodging in Providence and to offset digitization and other administrative expenses during the pandemic. More details about the different fellowships can be viewed at https://jcblibrary.org/fellowships/apply.
