Professional Science Master's

American University's professional science master's degrees prepare students and professionals for applied science work in industry and government organizations. The program provides students with the necessary technical skills to be successful in science, and the practical skills they need to navigate its intersection with business and government. Graduates of this program will be competitive for employment in private industry and within the government.

Three master of science degrees are offered: an MS in biotechnology, an MS in biostatistics and an MS in quantitative analysis.

Our professional science master's degrees combine coursework in the sciences and management. Students gain highly valued expertise and a competitive advantage in industries that generate and regulate scientific enterprise. Students gain core competencies in research methods, business and statistics. They also acquire hands-on experience with an internship and research capstone.

AU offers access to Washington's unparalleled resources: world-class research and regulatory institutions and renowned associations and government agencies dedicated to the advancement of science. On campus and off, learn best practices from leaders in science, business, and government.

Faculty connections with government and nongovernment science and health organizations are extensive. These connections are helpful for networking and obtaining internships at such prestigious organizations as the: Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Homeland Security, National Institutes of Health, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Science Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Study While You Work

AU's professional sciences master's program is designed for the working professional. Applications are accepted year round and students can earn a master's degree in two years. Most classes are held in the evening and students have the option to take classes on a full-or part-time basis. Students can start taking classes in the fall, spring, or summer semester.

MS in Professional Science: Biotechnology

American University's master's degree in biotechnology combines coursework in genomics and business management with the option of pursing study in neuroscience or public policy. This curriculum provides students with the tools necessary for careers with the biotechnology industry, genome research institutions, and government regulatory agencies.

Students will master topics in genomics, proteomics, neuroscience, biochemistry, molecular biology, and business management. Students can also choose among electives depending on their interests and career goals.

MS in Professional Science: Quantitative Analysis

American University's master's degree in quantitative analysis is a two-year interdisciplinary program that provides students with rigorous training in the sciences coupled with coursework in management. This curriculum provides students with the tools necessary to be competitive in jobs that involve biostatistics, predictive modeling, or data mining.

A capstone project and internship, along with professional development activities, prepares students with workplace relevant activities to deepen their understanding of quantitative and management methods.

Graduates of this program will be competitive for employment in industry and within government. Opportunities are plentiful with consulting firms, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, and within the financial industry.
