If joining the military is in your future goals, then the ASVAB is also in your future. The ASVAB is a series of tests designed to measure a variety of factors related to your future military service. It tests you to find out what knowledge, skills and abilities you currently have, and it also tests your aptitude for learning new things in your future military career.

ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, and the test results compose what is called your AFQT, or your Armed Forces Qualifications Test. This test is part of the admissions process of all branches of the military, yet it is not simply an admissions test. While it is true that some branches of the military require a minimum score on the AFQT, your score means a lot more than just determining whether or not you are accepted into the military. Your score can also dictate how you enter the military – where you are assigned and what you will be doing. It can also be used as an indicator to help determine your future career path.

For these reasons, the ASVAB is a test you should prepare for, like you prepare for your SAT or ACT college placement tests. Like the SAT and ACT, a good score on your ASVAB can create opportunities. It can open doors to future career paths within the military, so it is important that you do your absolute best. There are several ways in which you can study and prepare for the test.

One of the best things you can do to prepare for the ASVAB is to take practice tests. Practice tests help you in a variety of ways. First, it lets you know objectively where you are and can give you a good idea of what your score would look like if you took the ASVAB now. Second, knowing your practice tests results; the sections of the tests where you did well and sections where you did not so well, helps you understand where you need to focus your study. Focusing your study helps you save time, and eventually get a better score on the test. Instead of studying everything that will be on the test, you can avoid the things that you already know well and spend the majority of your time working to improve on areas that you don't know quite as well. Finally, taking practice tests alleviate stress and uncertainty. You already know what to expect when you walk in to take the actual test. You'll go into the test, already familiar with the material and the structure of the test.

Peterson's offers its set of practice tests in "Master the ASVAB, 21st Edition." This book provides four full-length practice tests to help you hone your skills and focus your study. In addition, Master the ASVAB, 21st Edition provides a diagnostic test, and profiles of over 125 military careers. At only $18.95, it is an essential part of your ASVAB preparation arsenal.
